Hilton Honors Amex Canada Review: vs. Marriott Bonvoy Amex — Do You Need It If You Have the Platinum?

If you collect hotel points in Canada, this is big news. On October 29, 2026, American Express Canada launched the Hilton Honors American Express Card — the first Hilton co-branded credit card ever offered in Canada. Until now, Canadians who wanted a hotel co-brand card from Amex really only had one option: the Marriott Bonvoy Amex.

I’m Jun, the points-and-budget half of this blog. I currently carry both the Amex Platinum and the Marriott Bonvoy Amex, and my rule is simple: a card has to earn back more than it costs. So when this card launched, my first question wasn’t “is it good?” — it was “is it worth it if I already have the Platinum, which gives me Hilton Gold anyway?” Here’s how I broke it down.

Hilton Honors Amex (Canada) at a Glance

What You Earn: Points on Everyday Spending

The earn structure is what caught my eye first. Most hotel cards only reward you well when you stay at that hotel. This one pays 4 points per dollar on the things you spend on every week in Canada:

  • 6x on purchases directly with Hilton hotels and resorts (including dining and spa charges billed to your room)
  • 4x at restaurants, coffee shops, bars, grocery stores, gas stations and food delivery in Canada
  • 2x on everything else

For a frugal household like ours, groceries, gas and eating out are where most of the monthly budget goes. That’s exactly where this card earns the most, which makes it far more useful than a card that only shines on hotel bills.

The Welcome Offer

RequirementReward
Spend $3,000 in the first 3 months60,000 Hilton Honors points + 1 Free Night Reward
Spend $500 in month 1310,000 more points
TotalUp to 70,000 points + a Free Night Reward
Launch offer for new applicants, valid until January 11, 2027. Current or former cardholders aren’t eligible.

$3,000 in three months works out to roughly $1,000 a month — very reachable for most households. The Free Night Reward is for a standard room for two at participating Hilton properties, and it expires 12 months after it’s issued, so plan a trip before you apply.

My one money rule here: never spend more just to hit a bonus. Move your normal bills and groceries onto the card for those three months instead. A bonus you overspend to earn isn’t a bonus.

Hilton Honors Gold: What It Actually Gets You

The card comes with Hilton Honors Gold status with no stays required. In practice that means:

  • Daily food & beverage credit or continental breakfast, depending on the brand and region
  • 80% bonus on base points from stays
  • Space-available room upgrades, up to executive floor rooms
  • Fifth night free on standard room reward stays booked with points

The breakfast perk is the one that matters most to me. With Marriott you need Platinum Elite to get breakfast; with Hilton, Gold already gets you a breakfast or food credit at most properties. For two people, that adds up quickly over a multi-night stay. Just keep in mind that upgrades depend on availability, and the exact food benefit varies by hotel.

Hilton Amex vs. Marriott Bonvoy Amex (Canada)

Elite night credits—15 per year
Spend-based statusDiamond at $40,000Gold Elite at $30,000
Earn rates are points per dollar. Hilton and Marriott points have different values, so don’t compare 6x vs. 5x directly.

The two cards reward different habits. The Marriott Amex is the classic “keeper” card: the yearly 35,000-point Free Night Award alone can cover the $120 fee if you use it well, and the 15 elite night credits help you chase status. The Hilton Amex is the better earning card, with 4x on everyday categories and a 50,000-point bonus once you hit $12,000 a year.

One important caveat: Hilton and Marriott points aren’t worth the same. A Hilton point is typically worth less than a Marriott point, so the right comparison is how many points the hotel you actually want costs per night — not which card has the bigger multiplier. (I covered the Marriott card in detail in my Marriott Bonvoy Amex Canada review.)

I Already Have the Amex Platinum. Do I Need This?

This is the question I spent the most time on. The Amex Platinum already lets you enrol in Hilton Honors Gold. So if Gold is the only thing you want, the new card adds nothing — paying another $150 for status you already have makes no sense, especially on top of the Platinum’s $799 annual fee.

But the Hilton card isn’t only about Gold. I split the decision into three questions:

1. Is the welcome bonus worth it to you?

Up to 70,000 points plus a Free Night Reward is a strong first-year return on a $150 fee — if you’ll actually stay at a Hilton in the next year. If you won’t, the points just sit there.

2. Do you want to earn Hilton points every day?

The Platinum earns Amex Membership Rewards, not Hilton points directly. If you want to build a Hilton balance from groceries, gas and dining, the 4x categories on this card are the most efficient way to do it in Canada.

3. Are you aiming for Diamond?

Spend $40,000 in a calendar year and you get Hilton Diamond, which lasts for the rest of that year and the whole next year. Diamond adds executive lounge access at participating hotels and higher bonus points — roughly comparable to Marriott Platinum. It’s a big spend, but for a household that puts most of its bills on one card, it’s a realistic target.

Which Card Is Right for You?

Get the Hilton Amex if you:

  • Stay at Hilton brands regularly
  • Spend a lot on groceries, dining and gas
  • Want to build Hilton points or aim for Diamond

Stick with the Marriott Amex if you:

  • Prefer Marriott hotels
  • Will use the annual free night every year
  • Want elite night credits toward Marriott status

Already have the Amex Platinum? Don’t get the Hilton card just for Gold — you already have it. Only add it if the welcome bonus, everyday Hilton points or Diamond status are worth the extra $150 to you.

My Verdict as a Points Saver

This launch is great news for Canadian travellers: we finally have a real choice between Hilton and Marriott. Personally, since I already hold the Platinum and Hilton Gold, I’m treating the Hilton Amex as a welcome-bonus and Diamond play, not a must-have.

In the end, the best credit card isn’t the one with the most perks — it’s the one that matches the hotels you actually book and the way you actually spend. Do the math on your own budget before you apply.
